Hello, I am Shameka, but some call me Mek. Welcome to Meek Life, where I share my journey towards wellness and a meek life and discuss my passion for wellness, music, books, & sleep.

I believe meek means submitting to life’s lessons and growing from them. So, I am going to share some of the mental, physical, and spiritual lessons I have learned or are currently learning while on my wellness journey. My first loves were music and books. So, I will also share some of my favorite songs and books. I believe music can help you express yourself and shift your mood. Most posts will have a song or musical reference. I will also have my Meek Life playlist posted in the dashboard for you to listen while you read. I am an avid reader, and I love to share the books I am reading. I am currently reading a lot of romance and self-help books but I consistently like inspirational, wellness, self-help, non-horror fiction, and romance books.  I hope you will leave with something new, whether it’s a wellness tip, recipe, a new book to read, or a catchy new tune. 

I am a “southern girl”, as Frankie Beverly would say, from a small town in the Black Belt of Alabama called Georgiana. From there, God led me to my second home in Birmingham, AL at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). At UAB, I earned my Bachelor’s in Nursing, a Master’s in Nursing concentrating in Family Primary Care and Rural Health, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Nursing.  I have medical/surgical, gynecology/oncology, and family primary care clinical experience in urban or rural areas.   I am passionate about providing resources that people from underserved and underrepresented populations can use to increase their overall wellness and decrease preventable disease diagnosis. I believe that there should be a focus on developing health maintenance behaviors in childhood, which led to my research focus of pediatric sleep health disparities.  Poor sleep is associated with risk factors for several leading causes of death in America, and these risk factors develop in childhood. I hope to use the information from my research to develop community-based and school-based behavioral interventions for improved sleep hygiene. So, along with my general wellness tips and music or book reviews, I will be posting about achieving and maintaining optimal sleep health and explaining some of the advances in sleep research.
